Annalisa and The Swedes

We are going to post a succession of blogs today, but they will be quick as we are forced to comply with time constraints.

Wednesday morning, we woke up wishing wed had a nightmare about running into the castle; however, the cut in the car was still smiling at us. Nevertheless, we went to the small grocery store called The Coop in Montalcino to buy the makings of a picnic lunch for our journey to Sant Antimo Abbey. We bought a bunch of bread, cheese, olives, olive oil, nutella and meat as well as a bottle of Chianti and a VAT of Rosso di Montelpulciano, which we planned on drinking later (and for many nights since it was a 5 litre bottle).

Keep watching future posts for pics of the vat as it diminishes!

Sant Antimo Abbey was beautiful! We had our picnic lunch in the shade of an olive tree in front of the beautiful cathedral. At 2:45, we proceeded into the church where we heard the monks chant. Gorgeous! (I should mention that we got lost on the way to the abbey, and we drove on a dirt road for miles and miles. This allowed us to see that the Tuscan dirt could actually mask the cut in the car! Bellisimo!)

Sant Antimo

After a lovely afternoon of reflection at the abbey, we headed back to Montalcino with every intention of heading to the larger city of Montelpulciano for dinner. Well, the charm of Montalcino and the people we met led us in a completely different direction.

Enter: Annalisa and The Swedes. Annalisa is the proprietor of Porta Castellana, our bed and breakfast in Montalcino. She is as gracious and hospitable as anyone you would hope to meet, especially in a foreign country. The Swedes, Michael and Maria, were on vacation for a week with no great plans, only to see the Tuscan countryside and drink lots of wine. (Sounded good to us!)

Enter the 5 litre bottle of red wine....and cheese...and tomatoes...and a CORONA. We spent the better part of the evening sitting under the gazebo of Porta Castellana sharing all of this with our new friends. The conversation, the food, and the wine were absolutely spectacular, and lets not even talk about the VIEW from this perch.

After a wonderful dinner (recommended by Annalisa because she knows the grandmother who makes fresh pasta for the restaurant every day) up 89 steps and in the heart of Montalcino (Baccanale Restaurant), we began our journey down those steps with gelato in hand. Three steps to go, and guess what? I slipped.

When I say "slipped" I mean fell very, very, very hard down three stone steps on my tender little buttocks. Ow. No, that doesnàt do it justice. Bleep, bleep, bleep OWWWWW! I can report three days later that it looks like a 3 year old got hold of a thick Marks O Lot and colored my ass purple. So I am a little sore, no?

Yes, that's my ass. Get over it. This is a picture of the third day. Stay tuned as it goes from tropical storm to hurricane!
